India Book Trust
Young writers and storytellers can reach out to those their age in South India who, although they have a rich culture, may not own a book. For years, our family has sent books to Indian schools and libraries. But we'd like to send more books, so are asking for help especially to put books in rural and urban libraries and non-formal education programs (that work with children who had to leave school to help their families).
Those children still in a village school start basic English in 3rd grade, but progress very slowly without any reading materials. But they are so eager to learn. So we are looking for well illustrated books, including:
- bright, easy alphabet and counting books
- easy books introducing vocabulary
- very simple readers
- accessible non-fiction, with limited text and clear, attractive illustrations
- picture books of simple fables, folk tales, etc.
We can't use books that are too tied into American lifestyles (eg. with rooms full of toys or huge refrigerators and cars), or religious books.
You can send book donations to us and we'll pack, or send a small cash donation if possible to cover postage, or gather books and send them yourselves (we'll provide the address happily).
