Workshops
Storytelling workshops are active and enjoyable. Small groups, up to 30, are best to encourage storytelling by participants. Larger groups are possible with a lecture-demonstration format. Handouts are available for all workshops.
Most workshops can be adapted for adults, children, or mixed family groups. Popular workshops are listed below; write me with special requests.
Family Stories
I show several family story boards/cloths, and cover ways to recall personal stories. Participants are then guided to remember and sketch their own true tales. I finish with hints on shaping and sharing these valuable stories.
Kamishibai Workshops
This wonderful Japanese storytelling prop belongs in classes, libraries, homes (see Kamishibai for description). I'll model kamishibai telling, show a range of sets, cover tips on designing and using sets in various settings. Participants will then begin to design their own sets to take home.
Asia Through Story
Using stories and traditional Asian props, we'll explore this varied region. Important Asian themes and worldviews are presented through representative tales, and ways to adapt Asian storytelling techniques for school/library use are offered. If desired, I can tailor workshop to focus exclusively on either Korea, Japan, India, or Southeast Asia.
Guiding Young Tellers
Storytelling is one of the world’s oldest, and best, teaching tools. Ways to guide young storytellers are shared, with many practical hints on story selection, rehearsal techniques, props, and more.
English through Storytelling
Storytelling is a marvelous tool to inspire language learning. I can adapt this workshop to various English levels or work with teachers. I use songs, poems, simple tales using sign language, audience participation, props, and lots of action. Students of all ages enjoy this playful approach to the language.
Beginning Storytelling
Participants explore the use of voice, gesture, language, and props in storytelling for any age. I start with a look at the range of storytelling materials, from family stories to original tales. Tips on shaping and telling are then shared in this active workshop.
