Making plans

Get information and set a date

If you are interested in a storytelling program, please contact me and ask for more information, including brochures, press clippings, and fee structure. When you are ready to set a date, we'll do so.

Share the news

A great way to prepare listeners is by reading some of my books to them. A good display in the halls or entryway can also build excitement, and a simple flyer can be made as well. For more ideas on displays and flyers, see Publicity.

Some schools like to include a few of my storytelling hints in a newsletter to parents, to help them feel a part of the visit; you'll find ideas to share in For Parents. If you want to reach local media, I’ll be happy to send a press kit, including a photo, for their use.

Create the setting

I like to keep the setting comfortable and relaxed; I prefer to stand in front of the audience and not on a stage. Children can sit near me on the floor; adults may have different needs. Lighting should be relaxed: no spotlights, since they create a sense of distance. For groups over 100, or in loud, outdoor settings, a microphone is needed. A stand-up mike is fine, although a clip-on mike is even better, if available. I might need a small table for props, depending upon my program, and always welcome water to drink.

Start the program

We can keep introductions very simple - take what you like from my bio page or use these brief notes:

Cathy has been a professional storyteller/writer for over 20 years. She has given programs in the U.S., Canada, South Asia, Korea, and Japan, and met hundreds of Asian storytellers in mountain temples, in traditional inns, at village performances, in homes of all kinds. Cathy has also written 15 books, including the ALA Notable, Nine-in-One, Grr! Grr!, numerous articles, and made several storytelling cassette tapes. Cathy lives with her husband, Indian sculptor Paramasivam, and their son, Manu, on an island off Seattle in a home which they built themselves, and in Cholamandal Artists Village in South India.

Finish with a flourish...

If the program is in a public setting and refreshments are possible, they always add a nice touch. I enjoy mingling informally with the audience after the program, and if book sales are desired, I'll be delighted to sign books at that time.
