Priya’s Day....

Tells about myself
That I am proud to be Indian
My acceptance of who I am
That happiness does not depend on wealth
That there are rich and poor in India, just as in every other country
That the mother/child relationship cuts across all cultures
That communication is possible between generations
That children can take responsibility for chores around the house
That children can help parents
That children are competent and capable of many things
That girls can manage on their own
That you can sleep as comfortably on a mat as on a bed
That the rupee is the unit of currency in India
That the rectangle can be divided in many ways
That one can be creative with shapes
That you can create 2 & 3 dimensional shapes with one sheet of paper
That some Indians eat dosais, chutney and peanuts
That the dosai is made by grinding grain
That chutney can be made from coconut
That there are combinations of flavours - sweet, sour, spicy etc - in food
That there are hills and plains in India
That the hills there can be cool and pleasant
That you can find butterflies there
That children fly kites in India too
That children in India like stories
That trickster stories are popular
That there is a trickster called Tenali Raman
That heavy stones can be used in different ways to grind things
That the word ‘Priya’ means love
That there are coconut trees in India
That women there often have long hair
That jasmine is a fragrant flower
That it can be strung into garlands
That a gift can be a simple thing made with love
That neighbours can be friends
That a simple life is not to be sneered at
That happiness means different things to different people
